Planning of stepped forests ¶
Forests in Switzerland and Central Europe serve a wide range of functions. To use the forests in a targeted way, thoughtful, long-term planning and efficient execution are required. However, planning and execution are often considered independently of each other and at different levels. With forest management units (FMUs), forest areas can be divided into meaningful units for planning, execution, and monitoring.
Depending on the forestry organization, planning level, and natural conditions, there are various concepts and guidelines on how and according to which criteria the forest should be divided and planned. With the growing availability of digitally accessible foundational data, increasingly precise information is becoming available, which should be integrated. In the "Planstufig" project, we have therefore developed a method that allows forestry operations to automatically divide area units into planning bases according to their individual guidelines. Modeled forest management units significantly reduce planning effort and enable cost-efficient management.
On this website, you will find information about what management units are, various case studies on how FMUs can be used in forestry operations, and how the technical implementation works.
