Technical implementation

Automated selection is based on spatial optimization.

In preparation, the technically possible timber harvesting method and possible transport lines must be modeled for the forest area. These can be possible cable lines as well as routes for ground transportation to the next forest road section, through to flight lines for helicopter transportation to the next landing site. As a result of the modeling, forest sections are formed that are accessible from the same forest road section.

In the spatial optimization, these forest areas are then combined based on the selected criteria. The resulting FMUs are as ...

  1. spatially compact and contiguous,
  2. within the modeled transport boundaries,
  3. uniform in terms of their properties for the selected criteria.

Details on the technical implementation and functionality of the model can be found soon in a publication.
